Griffin and Sabine : Book review

The extraordinary correspondence between London artist, Griffin Moss, and stamps designer, Sabine Strohem.

An amazing piece of art, Griffin and Sabine is an epistolary novel, by Nick Bantock. It is the first novel in The Griffin and Sabin Trilogy. The other two parts are, Sabine’s Notebook and The Golden mean respectively.

The whole story, the conversations between the two characters is told through a series of letters and postcards. They don’t talk to each other, nor do they know each other. They haven’t even met each other. Yet, they fall in love with each other, through their art and desire to belong to each other.

Plot : Griffin is an artist who lives in London and makes postcards. Sabine is also an artist of similar kind and lives on Sicmon Islands, somewhere in South Pacific. Griffin lives alone and is not a happy soul. One day, an unexpected postcard from Sabin, whom he doesn’t know, surprises him and out of curiosity he replies back. Nothing remains the same hereafter. Gradually, the communication increases through exchange of letters and postcards along with a new work of art, and they come close to each other. Griffin realizes that he is in love with her and the same is reciprocated by Sabine. His lonesome life changes into a happy life where he dreams and thinks about a person other than himself. But all this topples down when Sabine wishes to meet him in person. Griffin grows insecure and doubts upon Sabine’s presence. He rejects her offer to meet him. He thinks she is not real and that she is just a figment of his imagination, to draw away his loneliness. He stops corresponding with her and is led back to miserable condition as before. But all this proves to be a fail as Sabine sends him a postcard, filled with anger..stating that if he wont meet her, she will come and meet him. The book ends here. But not the story.

I came to know about this book while I was browsing Good reads. Before reading the book, I never knew that such exotic work of art existed in the world of books. This book, captivated me from the start. Nick has woven it in such a mysterious yet chic manner that the reader does not want to put this book away even for a second. It is an intimate love story between Grif and Sab, spun beautifully, with lots of colors and artistic drawings. I sometimes wondered if all that was happening in book, also happened in reality? But no, the fantasy is presented by Nick Bantock in such a way that the reader finds himself totally immersed in the ongoing. The two people who were complete strangers to each other once, astound the readers by a scintillating romance. One of the best things about it is the illustrations on the postcards and letters. Watching them closely, one can suck out the deepest meanings. The book is highly creative, written in an unusual, fascinating way. Nick’s style is gripping in every aspect.

I loved this book and I would strongly recommend all the art lovers to read the trilogy, if they want to know the new, fresh and twisting levels the art has gone to. I would give 5 out of 5 marks to this first part. Its rare to find such creativity, thrill, romance, excitement all in one writing. I am yet to read the other two parts of the series. I will be reading them soon and would let you guys know about the end.

Do read the book if you get a chance. This book is a treat for both, book lovers and art lovers. Don’t miss it!

Books – you better respect them!

Naming books. This may sound a little weird, but it shouldn’t. Even books need a name and that too, name that give the book a meaning and the reader a yearning.

May be books are not humans, may be not everyone reads them, but still, we all agree that books play an important role in our life, in one way or other. For me, they are everything, in fact, they hold the second place in my life, after God. So, for a person like me who loves books so much, its quite natural that every small issue related to books would be thought upon. Naming books may not seem to be an important issue to others, but today as I was browsing through a site related, I noticed that the names of books are not names, they are SENTENCES. Full sentences, with proper grammar and punctuation marks. So what are we doing here.. Naming a book or keeping a full fledged baby shower ceremony for it? hmm?

Now, how would you feel if your name is not ABC but ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ??? Tell me, how would you feel. Also, who would remember your name? In fact, who would even try to remember it? I don’t think even your family would make efforts, although they wouldn’t dare admit their mistake of giving you such a name. So, with books too, I don’t understand, why do people keep such long names for their so called ‘bestsellers’ ? I wonder how…just how do the readers remember these books? Keeping captions is fine.. but what is it with ‘Sentencing’ and not naming a book and then keeping the caption also of the same length? It feels as if the writer want the readers to understand everything through the name itself. May be in future, the whole book would be written on cover page itself. To top it all, the longer the name of the book, the shorter is the thickness, with large fonts, that somehow cover 100-150 pages and finally thank the readers.

In the earlier times, the books were actually named..with just one word. That one word was usually enough to rouse the curiosity of readers. The name itself held such power that excited its readers and provoked them to read the book. And indeed, only few of them ever disappointed their readers. But now, as I said they sentence the book and publish it. Simply. Sometimes they use a whole quote, and lo! we have the book ready. I mean, why cant the authors just keep it sweet and simple, yet saucy and exciting?!

Personally speaking, I don’t even bother to read the full name(sentence) of the book if its more than 3 -4 words. You see, these days wasting time doesn’t seem to be a good idea. If it takes so much time to read the title, when will I read the book. For me, it doesn’t gives a good impression of the book. It feels like the author is making too much and that too, unnecessary efforts to sell his book. Them writers look desperate. I don’t blame them actually, but where is the smart, I mean actually smart and chic and voguish feel that the book should give to its readers?! Its getting difficult to get such powerful, challenging-you-to-read books these days.

I would just wish that the new authors, or the have-been-authors for sometime learn to name their books in the way that they need to, and not in the way that repels readers from books. I also wish that they write for readers.. and not just to sell their books. I hope this happens sometime soon, although its not possible as such, but it should not harm if we get to read any such enticing books before 21st December 2012. 😛 Ok, that was a PJ.. but I seriously pray that the era of good, rich books, that in the name of modernization is just forgotten, comes back and nourishes the souls of us readers again!! Amen!

Have a nice day!

Happy New Year with realizations!!

Alright people. Here we are, entering into a new year…and me wishing you a very happy new year and that you get all that you wish for!

So, with new year, comes another popular word ‘RESOLUTION’. I don’t think there’s anyone out there who’s not heard this word. More than celebrating the new year, people think over new year resolutions, that they know would never be followed. They have become like promises, made to be broken. Anyways, the best time to have resolution/s is December end and January start. But believe me, the resolutions that are made apart from the stated time of the year are more successful. Have you made any? If yes, are you going to fulfill them? Well, the answer lies with you.

The purpose behind this post is not just wishing you all a happy new year and talking about resolutions. Its something else too. REALIZATION, that I find has more importance than resolution.

A few hours ago I was talking to my cousin. We were initially talking about how many people wished us new year at 12.00 am. She told me that her school friend called her too. She was happy. I also know that girl, so I asked my cousin about her well being and all. What I came to know was a lil shocking. Her friend is suffering from thyroid disease. She is 24 yrs of age. She is on bed rest and is seriously unwell. This is the time of her life when she should be enjoying the blossoms. I dint feel good when I heard this. Then I came to know some more similar instances about other people whom I know. It feels that inspite of having everything, they dont have the most important thing, happiness and peace of mind.

As we were talking about all this, we both agreed on the fact that no one.. not a single soul is happy in this world. Everyone has his/her share of worries and sorrows to take care of. I dont think that I ever saw those sufferers doing something bad to anyone. But still, they were living till their time of death.  And then I realized that the problems that these people are facing are much much much bigger than what I face. By god’s grace, I can be called a healthy person. I work, I earn, I am sane enough, I am independent. I feel all this matters a lot to have a proper life. At least I dont have to be at the mercy of others to sit and stand. Still, I am not happy???

Just because I don’t have the food I wanted to have? or I could not talk to the person I wanted to? or I wasn’t given a holiday when I wanted to have? Goddd, these reasons seem so tiny in front of the harsh reality that people are facing out there. I realized that I had no right to be angry or upset over such things that should not affect me. I realized that instead of getting irritated or frustrated over trivial issues, I should try to remain happy for what I have.  Instead of feeling dejected over the point that my best friend did not wish me new year, I should understand that we are still friends.

My cousin then told one thing that I don’t think I would ever forget – ” It really feels bad to look at such ‘once lively’ people in such a pitiable state, waiting for death. You never know what may happen the next moment, so live your present in such a way that you have no regrets later. Everything is uncertain. Remain happy for yourself. Live for yourself. Enjoy what you have.” And that’s right. I should be happy and thank god for each moment that I spend in his care. New year does not mean that you would enjoy only the beginning, it means that you have another 365 days (366 days in 2012) to make your dreams come true., to fulfill your desires, to make someone(it may be you) happy.

I know this post is a little dull for a day like today, when almost the whole world is rejoicing. But I really wanted to share this with you all. These realizations that I had last night, that would help me become a better person. I now feel that resolutions alone are not what make your life a success, you also have to have some realizations that would help you find the right path.  I hope you find something of importance in this post. I want to start my new year with these realizations in my mind. I don’t want to pretend anymore that everything is alright with everyone and I am the only one who is suffering. I want to be happy and I want to make others happy. Here, I decided what I want from new year and  its time you  also have some conversations with yourself !! Remember, when you smile, at least one person is there, without doubt who smiles with you!

Again, I wish you all a very Happy New Year! Enjoy and Succeed in whatever you do! 🙂
